CCP Alarmed at Murders on Court Premises
The news that two Christian brothers accused of blasphemy were shot
dead on the premises of a sessions court in Faisalabad, is most
disturbing. The incident which has lead to violent protests in that
area, not only smacks of intolerance, but of utter lawlessness as
well. Islam is a religion that preaches the love of God and all His
creatures, and the Prophet Muhammad ( peace be upon him), was well
known for his gentleness and tolerance. We, in the Islamic Republic of
Pakistan seem to be far removed from the ideals and teachings of our
revered prophet, and it is ignorance and misplaced zeal that leads to
abominable acts of barbarity in the name of religion. Whatever the
reason for this recent act of violence in the garb of righteousness,
it must be condemned by all, including those who claim to be the
custodians of Islam, that is, our religious leaders and scholars. The
Concerned Citizens of Pakistan (CCP), appeal to the government to take
serious note of this incident and find ways to ensure that such acts
of violence against minorities are not repeated in the future. While
no one condones blasphemy, it goes without saying that incidents in
which people take the law into their own hands show a failure of
governance and indicatesthe level of ignorance and lawlessness the
common man is beset with. If we want our religion to be revered, we
must be role models of exemplary conduct, and not negate its basic
principles.
