Appreciation for Mirza
Sir: The Concerned Citizens Society of Pakistan would like to express appreciation for Mr Khaled Mirza, who has recently retired from his position as chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP). His efforts to curtail cartels and monopolies have been acclaimed by many, though others with vested interests might have felt threatened by his strict adherence to the rule of law. It is a pity, and in fact rather alarming that he has been allowed to retire quietly. This too in the wake of the fact that the Competition Ordinance, which protects the rights of consumers, will lapse on August 19, 2010. The Ordinance must be made into law if it is to curb monopolies.
